Keeping you in the loop
Biko Kennedy,Youthlink Writer

"The title that I'm chasing, nobody has ever had it, because if I were chasing something that someone already has, I'd have to do what they've done, and I'm not trying to do that," said Richard 'Richie Loops' Webb concerning his path to success and his desire to achieve what his counterparts haven't.

Inspired by the artistry of Lil' Wayne and the creativity of Shaggy, Loops aims to create havoc within the dancehall arena, redefining the possibilities of lyrical expression. Here's what he had to say to Youthlink.

RICHIE LOOP

Youthlink (YL): In your earlier years you were a dancer, with your mother having dance classes. Why didn't you pursue dancing professionally?

Richie Loops (RL): After being to numerous parties and dancing to various beats, I thought to myself, 'Why not make a rhythm for me to dance to?' I did and it came out fairly good so I decided to stick to it.

YL: You once dreamt of becoming an automotive designer, what caused the shift?

RL: Within Jamaica the facilities aren't available to pursue automotive designing. It was mostly in Japan and the United States, and I didn't want to move away from my family and friends.

YL: What made you decide to transition from being just a producer to an artiste as well?

RL: I was really encouraged by a friend of mine after I voiced on the chorus of one of Beenie Man's songs.

YL: You were inspired to write and record 'My Cupp' after viewing an interview Lil' Wayne did. Would you say you are a fan of his music?

RL: Definitely! Lyrically and musically he's just ... amazing. I would be underestimating his persona ... he's a genius!

YL: Did you have great expectations for the 'My Cupp' single, seeing that you previously recorded tracks that weren't as successful?

RL: No, life has taught me to expect the unexpected.

YL: Reggae Sumfest, your first year performing, what was that like and what did that experience mean to you?

RL: The experience was just crazy. I had always wanted to perform in front of a large crowd and it really helped in pumping my confidence and preparing me for international crowds, which will definitely be larger!

YL: If your life were to be scripted as a movie, what would be the title and why?

RL: 'What's in my Cupp' ... (lol) It doesn't represent the beverage that's in there but depicts my persona; a really crazy/weird person (lol). People need to understand that the 'cup' phenomenon doesn't necessarily refer to alcohol because people's cup may be filled with the Holy Spirit 'til it overflows. So what's in your cup? (lol)

YL: How do you deal with female attention and distinguish between ladies who like you for being Richie Loops and those who like you for being Richard Webb?

RL: It's really hard to distinguish, but for right now, I'm just going with the flow.

YL: What's the first thing you notice/admire in a woman?

RL: Her attire. Unquestionably, she has to be well put together.

YL: What do you think is the biggest misconception about Richie Loops?

RL: That I'm a one-hit wonder.

YL: What words of wisdom did your mother share with you that have stuck with you thus far?

RL: Never give up!
