Questions on digestion
Monacia Williams, Contributor

Question 1

(a) (i) Using an annotated diagram ONLY, illustrate where digestion occurs in humans. [4 marks]

(ii) Describe TWO features of the system which makes it suitable for digestion. [4 marks]

(b) With reference to the products of digestion in humans, illustrate why the liver is sometimes referred to as the 'chemical laboratory' of the body. [7 marks]

ANSWERS

NOTE: Before you attempt to answer any question, you must read carefully to understand what it is asking.

Make careful note of the number of marks assigned to each section, as this will give you an indication of the number of points you need to include to get the maximum marks.

You are to write your answer using the same divisions given in the question. In other words, identify the section, (a) (i), write your answer, then move on to (a) (ii) and so on.

(a) What do you need to know to answer part (a)?

You need to know:

  • how to make an annotated diagram. This is a diagram on which short, descriptive notes are added to the labels. Notice the word ONLY? This means that the diagram should not have narrative coming after it.
  • The structure of the alimentary canal of humans well enough to draw and label it.
  • The functions of the different areas as this will assist you in making your diagram annotated.

(b) What do you need to know to answer part (b)?

  • What does the word describe mean? In describing, you need to say in words the relevant characteristics that make the feature suitable for its role in digestion.
  • What is meant by 'features of the system'?

(c) What do you need to know to answer part (c)?

  • What are the products of digestion in humans?
  • What does the term 'chemical laboratory' mean?
  • How can you connect this term with what you know about the liver?

Now that we have analysed the question, let us see if we can write the answers. (See diagram)

(a)(i) This section of the question requires you to know not just the different areas of the alimentary canal, but the different glands associated with it. The system has more than two features. but the question only asks for TWO, so your answer must be restricted to the TWO that the question requires.

  • Buccal cavity

This has the teeth that cut, tear and grind food in preparation for enzyme action and swallowing.

  • The tongue

A long, muscular organ which manoeuvres the food for chewing. It helps to mix the food with saliva and forms the bolus, pushing it to the back of the cavity in preparation for passage down the oesophagus.
