I
do trust that you have done your SBA
properly and have met the deadline
for the submission of it. I cannot
over emphasise the importance of doing
a good report and to obtain the highest
possible marks. Having done so, you
would have successfully completed
one question in the external examination.
Certainly, that is a good feeling
to have as you prepare to face the
rest of the examination in a few months
time. In today's lesson, I return
to the discussion of the June 2007
question paper. Question 7, the last
question under Section C (Human Systems)
is based on the economic activities,
tourism and agriculture. Here is the
question:
7.
(a) Study Table 2 which presents employment
figures (thousand persons) for two
sectors of a Caribbean territory.
TABLE
2: EMPLOYMENT (THOUSAND PERSONS)

Using
the information presented in Table
2, determine
(1)
the average yearly employment in agriculture
for the period 1998 to 2001
(1 mark)
(11)
the decline in employment in tourism
between 1998 and 1999 (1 mark)
(111)
the year in which employment in tourism
was at its HIGHEST(1 mark)
(1V)
how many more persons were employed
in tourism than in agriculture in
2004 (1 mark)
(b)
(1) Describe THREE ways in which Caribbean
countries can benefit from the development
of ecotourism. (6 marks)
(11)
Outline ONE problem associated with
marketing which is faced by Caribbean
farmers. (2 marks)
(c)
Compare commercial arable farming
in a named Caribbean territory with
wheat farming in the Canadian prairies
using the following headings:
(1)
Farm size (2 marks)
(11)
Climatic Hazards (2 marks)
(111)
Harvesting (4 marks)
(1V)
Labour (4 marks)
Total
24 marks
The
stimulus material for this question,
like the previous one, is a table.
As I have stated before, you are required
to use the information given in the
table to answer all the questions
given in section (a), so the key verb
remains STUDY. For this question,
also, you have to do a bit of calculation
to arrive at your answers. Your answers
are as follows:
(i)
The average yearly employment in agriculture
for the period 1998 to 2001 is 5.15
thousand persons.
How
do you arrive at the answer? You add
the numbers given for the four years
then divide the total by four.
(ii)
The decline in employment in tourism
between 1998 and 1999 is 1.5 thousand
persons.
To
calculate this, you subtract 12.3
(figure for 1999) from 13.8 (figure
for 1998).
(iii)
The year in which employment in tourism
was at its highest was 2000.
(iv)
The increase in the number of persons
employed in tourism than in agriculture
in 2004 was 7.8 thousand persons.
To
obtain your answer, you subtract 4.4,
the number of persons employed in
agriculture, from 12.2, the number
of persons employed in tourism.
Here
are the expected responses for section
(b) (I) which is asking you to describe
ways in which Caribbean countries
can benefit from the development of
ecotourism.
- Earning
foreign exchange for the country.
This in turn helps to improve the
balance of payments for the country.
- Provides
alternative employment for local
(host) communities, thus aiding
development.
- Providing
linkage industry with the farmers.
- Protecting
the environment and the wildlife.
The development of national parks,
for example, in the Blue Mountains
of Jamaica helps to ensure this.
- Fostering
an awareness of the need for conservation
among the local population and thus,
aiding environmental management.
- Protection
of the ozone layer.
The
discussion on the question continues
in the next lesson.
