Section
C, question 6 (c) (iii)
Marjorie Henry, Contributor
I
have been discussing question six
of the June 2009 CSEC paper for the
last few weeks. Today I will focus
on part (c) (iii), the final section
of the question. This section requires
that you suggest THREE reasons why
the CARICOM Single Market and Economy
(CSME) can help the Caribbean countries
to address some of the challenges
facing development in the region.
Here are some possible reasons:
- There
is a common external tariff to keep
out imports from countries outside
of the Caribbean; for example, the
United Kingdom and America
- Larger
markets in CARICOM can increase
income for manufactures
- The
movement of technology
- Movement
of skilled labour to address deficiencies
that exist in some countries, for
example, graduates of University
of the West Indies and media personnel
- Capital
investment in other countries
- CARICOM
encourages greater specialisation
within the countries and, therefore,
provide a greater variety of goods
- Increasing
trade between member states
- Increasing
the type of goods and services being
traded
- Removing
tariffs and quotas on goods traded
within CARICOM.
Now
that this question is completed, I
would like to identify, from the syllabus,
the specific objectives that were
tested. These are:
9.
Explain the importance of the different
types of economic activities to the
Caribbean.
10.
Locate an example of ONE of each type
of economic activity in the Caribbean.
13.
Explain the challenges faced by each
economic activity chosen in Objective
10.
Question
seven is the last question given under
Section C (Human System). Here is
the entire question. Go through it
using your textbooks to help you find
the answers. I will begin to discuss
it in the next lesson.
