Developing
your study (Part 2)
Marjorie Henry, Contributor
The
writing of the field study report
was my focus in the last lesson. I
will continue this week by discussing
the other features of the report that
are needed to complete it. You need
to develop a table of content. Again,
your draft helps you in getting this
done. The first thing you do on completion
of the draft is to number ALL the
pages in it correctly. The table of
content should include:
- The
Aim (or Aims) of the study ?
-
Methodology
- Analysis
and discussion
- Location
maps
- Conclusion
- Bibliography
- Appendix
Place
the correct page number for each section
beside it. There is only 1 mark for
this but make sure that you get it.
A
bibliography is also needed to complete
the study. For this, you record the
text and/or other sources that you
referred to for information on your
chosen topic. If you used more than
one text, these are to be recorded
in alphabetical order by author with
title, publisher, place and date.
For example:
London,
N. and Senior, M. Principles of
Geography for CXC, London: Longman,
2000.
Nagle,
G. and Spencer, K., Geographical
Enquiries and Techniques for Geography,
2nd Edition, Stanley Thornes Publishers,
2000.
The
title of the book should be highlighted.
It can be underlined or written in
italics.
If
you used the Internet to obtain information,
state the website and the date the
information was posted. Again, you
should highlight the website by underlining
it. Information from an article published
in the newspaper should be recorded
in the order of the name of the author,
the title of the article, the name
of the newspaper and the date.
In
addition to the table of content and
the bibliography, there should also
be an appendix. For this you should
include a sample of the questionnaire
or interview schedules, if one was
used; a sample of any instrument used
to collect data, and your checklist
for field observation. Do not include
the answers to the questionnaires.
You would have already used that information
in the report.
A
title page must also be done. This
page has your name, your registration
number, the name of your school and
the title of your study. This information
must also be on the outside of the
folder in which you are submitting
the study. The report should be submitted
in a soft-backed folder of 'Quarto'
or 'letter size'.
Let
me now turn your attention to the
assembling of the report. There is
a particular order in which the report
must be done for presentation. This
is as follows:
1.
Title page
2.
Strategy sheet
3.
Table of contents
4.
Location map(s)
5.
Aim of the study
6.
Method of data collection
7.
Presentation of data
8.
Conclusion
9.
Bibliography
10.
Appendix
Your
first draft is now ready for submission
to your teacher. You should expect
some feedback from your teacher as
soon as your teacher checks the draft.
However, do the first draft so well
that there would be no need to do
it again. Make sure to adhere to the
deadlines your teacher gives you to
complete and submit the report. Since
it is likely that you will have several
SBA for other subjects to complete
for the external examination, I feel
certain that you would be happy to
do this report early and have it out
of the way.
Do
a very good job on your report so
that you can be awarded most if not
all of the 40 marks for it.
