Guidelines in answering past paper III January '04

HI EVERYONE. I hope you were able to go through the past paper question that I gave you last week. As promised, this week's lesson will consist of some suggestions and guidelines in answering those questions. Please note, that although the question paper is a past CXC paper, the suggested answers and guidelines pre sented in this lesson are those of the writer of this lesson and not CXC.

Profile 1

ORGANISATIONAL PRINCIPLES

1. (a) A clue to the answer is the first sentence of the case. See also Unit ii of the syllabus. Note too that the name of the business ends in Ltd., indicating a limited company.

(b) The features listed should relate to the type of business given in 1. (a). This information should also come out of Unit ii of the syllabus.

2. See Unit iii of the syllabus ­ Functions of Managers. Any FOUR functions can be selected; planning, organising, directing, motivating etc.

3. See Unit ii of the syllabus ­ Benefits of Management Information Systems; savings in time, money, labour, etc.

4. (a) Supermarkets belong to the retail industry.

(b) Sole traders.

Production and Marketing

5. See Unit VI of the syllabus - Location of Industry. Factors include: price of land, availability of labour, infrastructure, transport, etc.

6. Consider the positive effects of growth e.g. spreading of risks, greater variety of goods, increased profits etc.

7. (a) See Unit vii of the syllabus - Answers may include: advertising, sales promotions, public relations etc.

(b) Define any ONE of the promotional strategies listed in (a) above and state how it will promote the launching of the branch.

8. (a) See Unit vii of the syllabus - Packaging: presentation and use of brand names. Answers may include: the development of brand loyalty and being able to distinguish their goods from their competitors.

(b) Difficulties may include: problems in the distribution process, which cause delays in the supermarket receiving their stock of goods. Also, theft may reduce profits. In addition, they may face heavy costs of advertising and other promotional strategies.

9. See unit ix - Insurance. The types include: insurance of the business premises, insurance of the goods and personal insurance for the employees of the business.

10. Answers may include: contributions to GDP/GNP and through
scholarships to the community. Also, trade is developed and through their reliance on other sectors, e.g., insurance.

11. (a) Borrowing money for expansion will be more expensive, therefore, expansion will be limited.

(b) It will be cheaper to borrow money, therefore, expansion will be easier and greater.

12. Answers may include the selling of shares and borrowing from commercial banks and other financial institutions.

13. See Unit viii under Format and Uses of Trade Documents. Documents used in transporting goods internally include the delivery note and the advice note and documents used for external trade the import licence, bill of lading and the airway bill.

14. See Unit viii under Format, Uses and Nature of instruments of payment. Answers may include: cash payments, credit and debit cards, cheques, etc.

Well, friends, that's it for now as far as the School-Based Assessment (SBA) and the 'Alternative' to the SBA are concerned. For the next few weeks we will consider some of the topics under Unit x The role of Government. Walk good until then.
