On
Monday, December 1, the lawns at Devon House
were packed with an overwhelming number
of patrons eager to take part in celebratory
activities recognising World Aids Day. The
event, put on by the Ministry of Health,
in association with the Jamaica Red Cross,
featured free HIV tests, exhibition booths
and a concert.
Under
the theme 'Lead, Empower, Deliver', this
year's focus was on the youth because of
the growing number of teenagers who continue
to practise unprotected sex. As of June
2007, there have been more than 200 reported
HIV/AIDS cases among Jamaican adolescents.
AIDS is now the second leading cause of
death among individuals 15 to 24 years old.
