Joyann Tabanor cares
Nicholas Morgan,Youthlink Writer

We find time to do the things we really want to do. Whether it's to go to the club, party all night or just have fun with friends, we will go out of our way to make it happen. Have you ever considered how much more of our time would be better spent helping people in need? How long has it been since you last reached out to someone else who is really in need? Twenty-two-year old Joyann Tabanor can't help but make time for others every day.

"I have dedicated a lot of time to community service. I started in the fifth grade, and now that I'm at the University of the West Indies, I continue my passion for giving of my time through my involvement with the University of the West Indies' Rotaract Club of which I'm the president," she told Youthlink. Madam president Joyann organises and plans drives to help others, tutors children and helps to make the environment better by performing beach clean-ups frequently.

When asked to recall her first act of community service, with a thoughtful smile she said she carried fruit baskets. To some, this may seem trivial but, for Joyann, the simple act blossomed into a passion for volunteerism.

"Giving back to the community is important to me because it allows me to impact the lives of others in ways that would not be possible otherwise. It is the impact that my actions have on their lives why I continue to perform community service."

What motivates you?

"Honestly, the end result. When I mentor children and I see their reaction and appreciation for me because of the help I give them, and when I see them gaining some measure of success, nothing compares to that and that is what motivates me."

Importance of volunteerism

Joyann stressed that giving to others without expecting to be compensated is essential.

"Volunteering is about being selfless, but there is also a lot to be gained. You become wiser, you appreciate life more, and nothing beats the sense of self-fulfilment that you gain," she said with conviction. Wise words from a caring heart.

To those struggling and in need of help, Joyann has this to say:

"God doesn't give us more than we can handle. Believe in God, try to learn from your experiences, both negative and positive, and rise above them. Have faith that things can and will get better."
