My thoughts

Arianne Hammond,Youthlink Writer

On a recent visit to a popular pharmacy, I saw a book merchant exchanging outdated copies of magazines for the recent updated issues. This makes one wonder if there is a market for teen magazines such as the popular Seventeen magazine, being one of the few teen magazines that still reign in the entertainment industry.

'My Thoughts' sought to get the opinion of Teneisha Hoffenden, an 18-year-old who enjoys reading as well as her take on these reading materials.

J-14

YL: A magazine for young, hip and trendy teens and for those who are trying to get there. J-14 is filled with all your favourite celebrities' information to keep fans in the know and give teens advice on the latest trends in the industry.

TH: The activities for this magazine are interesting, but this is more for my younger sister who reads it frequently. When I need a new hairstyle or some fashion advice I read it, but I am not a frequent reader of this magazine.

The Buzz

YL: The leading Caribbean magazine, though for a more mature audience, it showcases an authentic Caribbean flavour. Only Caribbean personalities grace the covers and inside, its content is varied - from relationships to sports features for the all-round Jamaican.

TH: I have never read this magazine before, I am aware of it but I have just never got around to reading it, so I have no opinion on it.

Seventeen

YL: This long-standing magazine started in 1944, according to a popular website. Its contents range from beauty tips to school and career advice. Each issue has celebrities' interviews, music, movies and TV coverage and controversial issues of personal and worldwide concern.

TH: I like their choice of models; they actually make the clothes look good. I like the way they advertise the products. They designers of this magazine may even inspire me to wear makeup. With advice on how to coordinate the clothes advertised, you are allowed to create your own style and I appreciate that they are considerate of all sizes.
